A cross-border project under Interreg VI A Deutschland-Nederland, running from 2026 to 2029. It develops and pilots a shared mobility system with adapted bikes for older people and people with reduced mobility, from fixed hub locations in the Netherlands and Germany. The bikes include duo-bikes, tricycles, wheelchair transport bikes, rickshaws and low-step bikes. Most shared mobility was never designed for people with specific mobility needs. FITS starts from those needs instead of adding them on afterwards.
The two service models
In FITS Volunteers, a trained volunteer accompanies or cycles with the user: planned, guided, often recurring rides. In FITS Stations, users reserve a bike and unlock it themselves at a connected hub. A pilot site can run one model or both. Running both side by side for four years is what will show which model holds up where, and what a location needs in place before self-service is realistic at all.
Who is behind FITS
A cross-border consortium of bike manufacturers, care and volunteer organisations, municipalities, regional authorities and knowledge partners. Van Raam is the lead partner and develops and supplies the adapted bikes. BeeManaged is the technology partner.
What BeeManaged builds
The platform behind the service: booking, matching riders with volunteers and bikes, access to the bikes at a hub, fleet status, notifications, and the figures each site reports. That is work package 4. The questionnaire is the co-creation step in work package 3, which turns each site's day-to-day practice into concrete requirements. We are not building a demo that lasts as long as the funding. The aim is one platform that works on both sides of the border and is still worth using in 2030, which is why the requirements come from you and not from us.
Accessibility is the point
FITS is for the people most software quietly leaves out: someone without a smartphone, someone who needs large text, someone whose carer operates the device on their behalf. The platform has to work for them, and at the same time for a coordinator planning twenty rides a week. That is a constraint we design around from the first sketch, not something we repair in a later release.
What we ask of you
A working relationship that runs the length of the project rather than a form to return. It starts with the questionnaire and a session per site. Then your reaction to the first wireframes, then the platform in daily use at your location while we keep adjusting it to what you run into. Near the end we write down what worked and what did not, so the next organisation does not start from nothing. Your practice is the design brief. The more precisely we understand it now, the less you have to bend your way of working around the software later.
Where this goes after 2029
The project has an end date, but the service is meant to outlast it. FITS works towards models that keep the rides running once the funding stops, and towards a toolkit that lets another region set up the same thing without repeating four years of groundwork. It is also why the platform is built once for both countries instead of separately per site.
