FITS: the platform behind shared adapted bikes in the Netherlands and Germany

FITS is a cross-border project under Interreg VI A Deutschland-Nederland, running from 2026 to 2029. A consortium of bike manufacturers, care and volunteer organisations, public authorities and a university develops a shared mobility system with adapted bikes for older people and people with reduced mobility, from fixed hubs in the Netherlands and Germany. vanRaam is the lead partner and supplies the bikes. BeeManaged is the technology partner and builds the platform behind the service: booking, matching riders with volunteers and bikes, access to the bikes at a hub, fleet status, notifications and the reporting each site needs. The platform supports two service models. In FITS Volunteers a trained volunteer rides along; in FITS Stations users reserve and unlock a bike themselves. The requirements come from a co-creation round with the pilot partners, so the platform follows how each site works.
The question
Most shared mobility was never designed for people with specific mobility needs. FITS starts from those needs. The software has to work for someone without a smartphone as well as for a coordinator running a fleet across several locations, in two countries and two languages.
What we are building
- Booking for rides and bikes, for both service models.
- Matching of participants with volunteers and suitable bikes.
- Access to the bikes at connected hubs.
- Fleet status, notifications and reporting per pilot site.
- Four roles: coordinator, volunteer, participant and site admin.
How it is built
The pilot partners describe their day-to-day practice in a structured questionnaire, and those answers become the requirements. The aim is one platform that works on both sides of the border and is still worth using after the funding period ends.

FITS shows the other half of BeeManaged: next to agents, we build and run the software around them, for a consortium with public partners and strict accessibility needs.
